Cold War Commander -First Thoughts

Yeah, it's a game review. Most of you have probably already tried it, but I am nothing if not behind the power curve. (The post has been in draft form for 6 months....) Soviet forces advance across the North German plain. The biggest issue I have always had with Modern Microarmor games is managing the technology. My first expereience with historical wargaming was playing a modern microarmor game called "Engage and Destroy" back in the early 80's. It was a 1:1 scale game that used armor penetration charts and exhaustive data tables. We had cool little periscopes to check line of site, and 75% of our forces were small pieces of paper with the names of tanks written on them. (My first miniatures were a pack of GHQ BRDM-1s and Chieftain Mk 5s, painted with my Testor Enamels.). Baccus 6mm Austrian Casualties

Following up from the Adler French casualty tokens I have these Austrian ones from Baccus. These are just the Infantry tokens from the set. (I still have 15 Cavalry casualties to do.) You get 40 infantry pieces in a pack and they are fairly good half castings. The detail is perfect for the scale, and they are much more durable than the Adler figs. (There is nothing sticking up to snap off.) The castings include a mix of Helmets and Shakos with some grenadiers thrown into the mix as well. The cavalry figures will take longer as they are no where near as clean. In fact the detail is very hard to pick out and they look more like molten lumps without the paint. Not a slam, it is just that I had a hard time telling them apart from the Norman casualties I got at the same time. If I had any other critiques of Baccus' current casualty line it is that lack of similar French castings. (There are British and Russian packs, so I assume they are pending...) Also, there are n

Basing and Base Sizes

I am sure I am not alone when I cry out in wailing consternation and a great gnashing of teeth over the ordeal of basing and organizing wargaming armies. Every game system tends to use different standards for basing, and trying to stay 'generic' is challenging to say the least. If you don't pontification about wargaming minutiae, it is best to leave now. I am an over-educated physics major. That means literature is not my forte, but weird details are.... When I first started wargaming, I was a big proponent of base removal. Over time, however, I found this unit attrition model less appealing. Conceptually, the idea does not adequately reflect the realities of warfare above the skirmish level. Most unit simply did not remain effective long enough for the level of attrition we are modeling. TYW -Sprucing Up my Swedish Infantry

Swedish Black regiment I picked up a second "Push of Pike" boxed set on a fairly steep discount that I plan to use for experimentation moving forward. I am still trying to get the right look for my Pike and Shotte units, as they seem rather sterile so far. I opted to use some of the separate musketeers from the commanded shotte units to put some skirmishers out in front of an advancing regiment. I grouped the marching shotte stands from two sprues together with another standing pike to build out this new regiment. I did the coats in charcoal black with a mix of colors for the trousers to create the 'black regiment.' I recognize that uniforms aren't really a thing for this time period, but I want to be able to different units at a distance here. For the second regiments, I used the left over strips/models to do a pike block with two ranks at the ready. TYW- Scottish Experiment

Scottish pike & shotte regiment in Swedish Service I picked a few copies of the November issue of Wargames Illustrated for the sole purpose of getting three of the new ECW/TYW Scots frames from Warlord. The three copies of the magazine came out to around $28 US, which is a significant reduction from Warlord's steep asking price for these plastics (~$16 a sprue). This also gave me the opportunity to experiment with smaller base sizes. I quite like the collection and look of the epic scale TYW range, but the multi-stand units are a move away from my tendency towards single stand units. Jonathan directed me towards Steve's efforts over at Sounds Officer's Call . I think his efforts at reducing the unit size turned out quite nice. In addition, I have seen a large number of collectors downsizing their cavalry and artillery units to only two stands rather than three. This has the advantage of significantly reducing the overall footprint of each army, which should help
